Are You Worried You’re Worrying Too Much?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

We all experience some stress in our lives every day, but if you find yourself worrying so much that you’re losing sleep and having a hard time concentrating at work, then it is time you took action. Worry and fear are powerful emotions, and if left untreated they can often lead to anxiety and even depression.

The first thing to remember is that just as a seed cannot grow without soil and water to nourish it, your anxiety cannot grow without you feeding it. Anxiety is caused by an intense fear or worry about a possible outcome. These are the thoughts that are running unchecked through your head. The only way to control your anxiety is by controlling your thoughts.

You can begin by thinking back to other times when you worried about something. Did the fear come true or was the worry groundless? How much time have you wasted agonizing over something that never came about? It’s okay to have a little anxiety, everyone does. It’s when the worry begins to control your life that it has become a serious problem.

Worry has never solved anything. Because worry is a form of fear and intense fear can paralyze us, anxiety can actually make us fear making a decision and prevents us from solving the problem. Instead, we just keep running the same negative possible outcome over and over through our heads. Our fear actually creates additional fear.

If there is something wrong, then you need to focus on fixing it instead of worrying about it. If it can’t be fixed, then worrying about what might happen tomorrow accomplishes nothing except spoiling today. Worry on its own has never fixed anything.

Anxiety can become a vicious cycle that feeds itself. The only way to overcome the anxiety is to overcome the fear, and this is accomplished by changing your thought process. Rather than having a mind full of fear, fill it with hope and favorable outcomes. Events seldom turn out as terrible or as wonderful as we imagine they will. Our thoughts tend to the extreme while life is usually somewhere in the middle.

Concentrate on the positives and when you feel any negativity creeping into your thought process, push it away and go back to the positives. It is like a tug-of-war, either you control your anxiety or your anxiety will control you. Start with small issues and work your way up to larger ones, always picturing a positive outcome. Once you can keep these positive results in mind, you then need to begin taking positive action to make them come about. The cure for anxiety begins as a thought and then works its way into a positive action.

If you are carrying around a lot of worries, you need to either let some of them go or get yourself bigger shoulders.electric car motor|electric car motor|electric car motor

Why You Should Take A Break

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

The modern world we live in moves incredibly quickly, with lots of people living their lives by deadlines and efficiency. Whilst productivity may increase in the short term by adopting this ideology, it is not a sustainable healthy way to live and in fact many doctors have warned of the dangerous implications of this type of stressful lifestyle. This is actually evident in the statistic that treatment numbers for work-related stress have almost doubles over the last five years. Regular breaks away from stressful environments is among the top recommendations made by doctors all over the country to help combat anxiety-related health problems. Below are details of why talking time out can help your mind and body so much.

Hormone Equilibrium. When you are under stress or anxiety there is a cocktail of hormones released into the body which act to make you more alert and give you faster access to energy stores. This is necessary in acute situations, but if these hormones are present in the body for any great length of time, they begin to effect the overall functioning and can lead to problems such as heart strain, muscle soreness and stomach ulcers among other things. When you take some time to relax and reduce anxiety levels, hormones levels balance out again and the body can go back to functioning normally.

Emotional Reflection. The emotional importance of taking a break is often underrated, but it is in fact vital that people give themselves the opportunity to gain some perspective on their issues and re-prioritize them. Going on luxury cruise or visiting a health spa will give you time away to clear your head, sort out your priorities and help you to get a better picture of the direction you are heading. If you don’t live near the sea then river cruises such as Oceania cruises will do just fine.

Weight Loss Dillemma: Depressed If You Do, Depressed If You Don’t

Monday, August 24th, 2009

There are many reasons why people become depressed, especially with all the pressures and demands of 21st century living. People get the blues when they get passed over for that promotion that they’ve been aiming for because management wanted someone younger and livelier. There’s that beautiful girl you’ve always wanted to have a relationship with, who turns out to be more interested in your sister than you. Not every situation that can make a person sad or melancholic can also cause depression, turning a person into the emotional health equivalent of a 50-car pile-up on a busy highway.

However, there are a few things you’d never expect to actually be the cause of a person feeling depressed. One example of this would be weight loss pills, some of which have recently been found to cause people to become depressed. In a world where weight and appearance are major concerns, to the point that some people become obsessed with achieving the “perfect” weight, medication that helps attain becomes so materially valuable, and expensive in terms of real dollars and cents.

But what happens when that same drug causes a problem that, in theory, it is supposed to prevent? British and Danish researchers have managed to independently confirm that one particular diet pill, Acomplia, can cause depression. According to the study, there was a significant increase in the risk of various emotional disorders during use of the drug, with residual effects manifesting after regular use has been discontinued. The study found that the people who were given the actual drug during the testing period were 2.5 times more likely to develop some sort of emotional disorder than those who were given a placebo. Patients given Acomplia were also more likely to develop anxiety or emotional problems than those who were given a placebo.

Recently, US health authorities decided not to allow Acomplia to be marketed in the States because of the possible psychological effects it might have. This was reportedly decided before the findings conducted by Danish researchers were published in the Lancet Journal. Physicians of people who have already used the medication are advised to be on the lookout for any signs of these psychological effects, with suicidal thoughts and depressive behavior being given particular notice. There were other effects that, in theory, could be just as severe, but were less likely to manifest without long-term use.

According to the study, the drug did have appreciable effects on combating obesity. All those who were subjected to the study and given the actual medication lost weight over the one-year period. However, there was a remarkable 40% increased risk of developing emotional disorders, with the potential for more permanent psychological damage. This was on top of both the weight loss and positive cardiovascular effects that maintained use of the medication provided. However, most medical authorities concede that the positive effects may not effectively outweigh the negative potential of prolonged use of the drug.

For the time being, the study is shown to have cast doubt on the relative safety of people using the drug. Most authorities are still considering further study before making a final decision, prompting medical professionals to simply watch out for signs of a deeper problem forming. However, there is definite cause for a pull-out of the drug from several markets should further evidence show that Acomplia does more harm than good. Similar studies have been conducted for various other weight loss drugs, but they have not yielded any noticeable negative psychological effects.

There are, however, a number of safe and effective weight loss products available in the market. With proper consultation with a doctor or health care professional, a weight watcher can access these slimming products without having to worry about possible side effects.

Untested Weight Loss Drugs May Cause Severe Depression

Monday, August 24th, 2009

There are a lot of new medications available today specifically for treatment of depression, anxiety, erectile dysfunction, obesity, among others. The good news is that there are new drugs that offer effective treatment for patients who suffer from these ailments. While research on the safety of anti-depression drugs has been quite extensive, the materials on the effectiveness and safety of anti-obesity drugs are not as comprehensive.

In a recent study published in the United Kingdom, it was found out that patients taking certain anti-obesity drugs had an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Study also linked the drug to the development of thoughts about committing suicide.

In another study involving Danish researchers who worked with 4,105 volunteer patients found that people taking 20 milligrams per day of an anti-obesity drug were 2.5 times more likely to discontinue treatment due to depressive disorders. The patients were also three times more likely to stop medication because of anxiety compared with those who only received a placebo.

Many anti-obesity drugs being sold in different countries are actually still pending approval by many drug regulation agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The reported increase of risk depression and suicidal thoughts associated with these drugs have made their chances of approval close to nil. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen believe that patients using untested and unapproved drugs would only see “modest” weight loss with many still remaining significantly overweight and obese. The researchers also found recorded several side effects—ranging from dry mouth to headaches to depression in patients who used these slimming pills.

To escape the possible dangers of using unapproved and untested anti-obesity drugs, some medical experts offer the option of undergoing bariatric surgery. Some of the surgical procedures used to promote weight loss include biliopancreatic diversion, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty. Gastric bypass is one of the most commonly used procedures in the United States, accounting for at least 140,000 operations done specifically for weight loss purposes. The said procedure has been in utilized for more than 50 years and, as such, has been sufficiently studied in the medical community.

But what is a person who wants to lose weight already shows some signs of depression? The first step is to get support and encouragement from friends and family. At times, seeing a psychiatrist or a counselor may be necessary. It is also important not to set too high expectations in terms of losing weight. The weight loss program has often been referred to as a journey, and not a race. It takes time to lose weight and any rush to shed off unwanted pounds may have serious consequences in physical and emotional terms. Of course, no diet program will work unless a person engages in regular exercise. Physical activity immensely helps in burning calories. If a weight watcher strictly follows a good and balanced eating plan while doing regular physical exercise, there is no reason why he or she cannot lose weight.
