Something to Chew On

I’ve been seeing a lot of news articles lately about chewing gum being touted as a way to relieve stress and anxiety.

In “An investigation into the effects of gum chewing on mood and cortisol levels during psychological stress,” a team of researchers from Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia conducted a study involving 40 people to monitor stress levels with and without chewing gum.

The group, led by Andrew Scholey, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, found that the anxiety levels of the 20 subjects that were chewing gum actually lowered by 10 to 17%. They also showed an 8 to 19% improvement in alertness compared to the non-gum-chewing group.

In conclusion, the researchers determined that chewing gum can reduce anxiety and stress levels, increase alertness and improve concentration.

I suppose it does make sense. I know I’ve used gum in the past when I was trying to quit smoking and it did help a little. And every little bit helps!
